AI wealth concentrates as layoffs accelerate, widening tech's insider gap
A generation of workers is exiting the sector while a narrow cohort of AI founders and early employees captures extraordinary gains.

The technology industry is producing two distinct classes at velocity. According to TechCrunch, tens of thousands of workers are being laid off as companies restructure around artificial intelligence, while a small group of AI insiders is accumulating wealth at a scale that dwarfs previous booms. The gap is not just wide. It is widening in real time, and the people on either side can see each other.
This is not the usual churn of creative destruction. Previous waves of automation displaced factory floors and call centers, places distant from the wealth creation. This time the layoffs are happening inside the same companies, sometimes the same buildings, where equity packages are minting new fortunes. The combustible element is proximity.
The Financial Times notes that risk appetite remains strong, with Asian equities rallying after a US-Iran peace deal and the record SpaceX IPO driving investor euphoria. The appetite for AI exposure has not cooled. Capital is still flowing toward the handful of companies and individuals who control the models, the compute, the data moats. Meanwhile, the workers who built adjacent products or managed operations around older technology stacks are being told their roles have been optimized away.
Stewards should watch the cultural residue. The last time wealth concentrated this fast in tech, it produced a cohort of founders who believed disruption was always worth the cost. This time the displaced are not coal miners or cab drivers. They are people who learned to code, who moved for the job, who believed they were on the right side of the future. Their loyalty is now in play, and so is their vote, their spending, and their willingness to build the next thing for someone else.
