Anthropic Fable 5 export controls lifted after 18-day pull

The Trump administration cleared Anthropic's Mythos-class model for general access Tuesday, ending a restriction window that began in early February.

The Department of Commerce lifted export controls on Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 on Tuesday evening, restoring public access to the Mythos-class model after an 18-day restriction. Anthropic confirmed the decision on X and said it would begin restoring access immediately.

The restrictions began in early February after unspecified cybersecurity concerns triggered a government review. Last week the administration allowed a limited rollback, permitting Fable 5 access for a select group of government-approved organizations. Sources told Axios at the time that full access could return within days. That timeline held.

The restriction window matters less for what it revealed about model security than for what it showed about provider dependency on executive-branch clearance. Anthropic could not ship its highest-capability product for nearly three weeks. No pricing adjustment was published. No substitute SKU appeared. The model was off and the revenue associated with it stopped.

Fable 5 is Anthropic's current top-tier offering in the Claude line. The Mythos designation refers to the internal capability class; Anthropic has not published a formal taxonomy but the naming convention tracks with models above a certain parameter threshold and context length. Pricing for Fable 5 was last listed at $15.00 per million input tokens and $75.00 per million output tokens before the restriction.

The control lift does not clarify what the triggering event was. The AP described it as a "cybersecurity alarm" but neither Commerce nor Anthropic has detailed the nature of the vulnerability or whether it was model-specific or infrastructure-adjacent. The speed of the reversal suggests the issue was procedural or perimeter-related rather than a core weights problem.

For frontier providers, the episode establishes a new operational surface: not just model safety as a reputational or legal risk, but model *availability* as a function of case-by-case export discretion. That discretion now has a measured cycle time. Eighteen days, one restricted-access phase, one clearance. The next event will confirm whether that is a floor or an average.
