Anthropic Structures Hyperscaler Debt Deal
Anthropic partners with Macquarie and GIC to form Theseus Infrastructure, financing data center development as shadow banking expands in AI capex.
Anthropic is financing its own hyperscaler footprint. The AI provider partnered with Macquarie and GIC to launch Theseus Infrastructure, a vehicle to fund Anthropic-anchored data center sites. The structure moves capex off the balance sheet while securing dedicated capacity.
Shadow banking now funds the AI buildout. When traditional lenders retreat, specialized vehicles absorb the risk. Macquarie and GIC are filling the gap that banks left open. The financing structure matters more than the facility announcements.
The ROI on these builds remains unproven. Hyperscaler capex accelerated in 2024, but utilization metrics lag. Anthropic is locking in capacity before the market prices the obsolescence curve. The debt will outlast the Hopper generation GPUs it funds.
This is the second wave of AI infrastructure financing. Direct equity builds slowed as providers priced the capital intensity higher. Structured finance with dedicated off-take agreements is the new model. The question is whether the token economics support the debt service.
