BlackRock Moves to Index Private Markets
The asset management giant's Preqin acquisition and SMA launches signal a push to democratize private market access as the sector shows signs of recovery.

BlackRock is making a concerted push to bring private markets into the indexed, accessible realm traditionally dominated by public securities. The firm's acquisition of Preqin, a leading private markets data provider, represents what BlackRock executives describe as an effort to "index the private markets." This strategic move follows the launch of separately managed accounts (SMAs) containing private market assets in partnership with Partners Group, signaling a broader institutional push to democratize access to alternative investments.
The timing appears strategic, as private equity performance shows signs of recovery. Carlyle reported strong earnings driven by a rebound in realizations, suggesting that private market exits are becoming more favorable after a challenging period. This improved exit environment provides a more attractive backdrop for BlackRock's private market expansion, potentially making the asset class more appealing to a broader investor base.
The institutionalization of private markets represents a significant structural shift in how alternative investments are accessed and valued. By bringing the indexing and data analytics capabilities that transformed public markets to the private realm, BlackRock is attempting to solve one of the biggest barriers to private market adoption: lack of transparency and standardization. The SMA structure further addresses liquidity concerns that have traditionally limited private market participation to institutional investors and high-net-worth individuals.
However, the push comes as BlackRock implements cost-cutting measures, including a reduction of approximately 1% of its workforce according to internal memos. This suggests the firm is reallocating resources toward growth areas like private markets while maintaining operational efficiency. The combination of strategic acquisitions, new product launches, and organizational restructuring indicates BlackRock is positioning itself for what it anticipates will be increased demand for private market exposure as the asset class matures.
