Europe Heat Wave Impossible Without Climate Change, Attribution Study Finds

June temperature records fell across the continent as scientists confirm human-caused warming made the extreme heat "virtually impossible" half a century ago.

A deadly heat wave swept Europe this week, setting new June temperature records in the U.K. and France and prompting extreme heat warnings from Ireland to Slovenia. The World Meteorological Organization warned the heat will persist across Western, Central, and Southern Europe for the next two weeks.

A World Weather Attribution analysis released this week concluded that human-caused climate change made the extreme temperatures "virtually impossible" fifty years ago. The rapid attribution study underscores how baseline warming has shifted the probability distribution for temperature extremes across the continent.

The heat arrived as Europe's fashion industry scrambled to adapt. According to AP reporting, the sector was caught unprepared by the intensity and duration of the wave, disrupting supply chains and forcing operational changes in manufacturing and logistics hubs that lack cooling infrastructure.

The economic footprint extends to travel. Heathrow cut its passenger forecast, citing as much as a 5 percent decline tied to conflict in Iran and softening global demand in April and May, per the Financial Times. While the airport attributed the revision to geopolitical risk, the heat wave adds a second variable affecting European travel patterns during a peak season.

Attribution science has matured to the point where researchers can now quantify the role of emissions in individual weather events within days of occurrence. The European heat wave marks another data point in a widening set of extremes that would not exist in the absence of the roughly 1.2 degrees Celsius of warming since preindustrial times.
