Casey Foundation shows that children's wellbeing declined nationally from 2019 to 2024, with kids in 29 states faring worse than before COVID.

The divergence is structural. Labor-market aggregates measure flows—hires, quits, openings. Household strain measures stocks—savings buffers, food security, access to care. A tight labor market can coexist with rising costs, safety-net reductions, and balance-sheet fragility, especially for families with children.
