Private equity tests software in AI era

Two billion-dollar exits show how investors are pricing business software differently as AI reshapes the market.

Two billion-dollar private equity exits landed this week, and both are telling us something about how the market is pricing business software in the age of AI. In Italy, TeamSystem's private equity owners are exploring a stake sale that could value the company at €8bn, according to FT Companies. The deal will test whether investors still want to back traditional business software groups when AI is roiling the sector. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, Arlington Capital Partners closed a $1.45bn sale of Riverpoint Medical to Novanta, PE Hub reports exclusively. Riverpoint makes software and equipment for medical procedures, a niche that has been relatively insulated from the AI disruption conversation.

The contrast matters. TeamSystem provides accounting and business management software to Italian companies - exactly the kind of vertical that AI companies are now targeting with automation tools. The €8bn valuation question is really about whether traditional software multiples hold when every pitch deck now promises AI-driven efficiency gains. Riverpoint's medical technology focus, by contrast, operates in a more regulated space where AI adoption moves slower and customer relationships matter more than algorithmic disruption.

Private equity firms are clearly making different bets about where software value lives going forward. One is testing whether a traditional software leader can command premium pricing despite AI headwinds. The other is cashing out of a specialized software play that sits somewhat outside AI's direct path. Both moves will become reference points as other PE firms decide whether to hold or sell their software portfolios in 2024. The divergence in exit strategies suggests we are entering a period where not all software is created equal in the eyes of investors.
