AI Margin Compression

A thesis schema — the cost of intelligence falling faster than the price of software puts software-sector margins under structural pressure.

Overview

This is Palanor's house schema for the macro thesis we have been writing into. It is not a neutral framework — it is a position, scored against signals so you can see whether the world is supporting or refuting it.

Stages

Four stages — Denial, Pressure, Compression, Resolution. Most software businesses have spent the post-2023 period in the first two; the third is where margin structures publicly reset; the fourth is where the new equilibrium prints.

Reading it

High confidence in Pressure or Compression means the underlying signals (tech equity strength, services PMI, wage growth) are aligned with the thesis. Low confidence or a Denial stage reads as the market still pricing the old margin structure as safe.

Phases

  1. Stage 1

    Denial

    Current read

Tech equities and services pricing as if AI is a tailwind, not a margin threat.

  2. Stage 2

    Pressure

Cost stack rising (wages), GPU/inference deflation visible, but earnings still hold.

  3. Stage 3

    Compression

Earnings revisions accelerate; software ARR aggregate decelerates.

  4. Stage 4

    Resolution

New margin equilibrium prints; winners and losers separate.
