Howard Marks Market Cycle

Markets oscillate between fear and greed in four observable stages. The investor edge is recognizing which stage you are in, not predicting the next one.

Overview

Howard Marks of Oaktree built his career on a deceptively simple discipline: read the cycle, position against the consensus emotion. The framework names four stages defined by what the average investor believes about risk.

Stages

Four stages — Despair, Skepticism, Optimism, Euphoria. Marks’s rule: buy when investors hate risk; sell when investors love risk. The framework reads market sentiment, not market direction.

Reading it

High confidence in Euphoria with rising trend is a tactical sell. High confidence in Despair with stable or improving trend is a tactical buy. The schema is most useful when read alongside Steward Confidence Index — they often disagree, which is informative.

Phases

  1. Stage 1

    Despair

    Current read

Risk hated. Spreads wide, vol high, capital scarce. Forward returns highest.

  2. Stage 2

    Skepticism

Risk tolerated reluctantly. Recovery underway but disbelieved.

  3. Stage 3

    Optimism

Risk embraced. Spreads compress, multiples expand.

  4. Stage 4

    Euphoria

Risk loved. Tight spreads, high multiples, leverage proliferating. Forward returns lowest.
