What this schema reads

Labor markets are leading indicators of macro turn — quits lead unemployment by 6–9 months; wage growth lags by 3–6. The schema reads all three dimensions together so the regime is visible, not just the snapshot.

Why this matters now

The 2021–2022 talent overheating drove wage-price pressure and retention crisis. The 2023–2024 cooling has been uneven — AI-affected white-collar roles compressing while skilled trades remain tight. The schema sits at the inflection between Tight and Cooling, with sectoral divergence visible.

Phases

  1. Stage 1

    Loose

Unemployment > 5%. Employer leverage. Easy hiring. Wage growth modest.

  2. Stage 2

    Balanced

Unemployment 4–5%. Quits + hires steady. Modest wage growth. Soft-landing posture.

  3. Stage 3

    Tight

Unemployment < 4%. Wages accelerating. Quits rising. Retention pressure visible.

  4. Stage 4

    Overheated

Turnover crisis. Retention failing. Wage-price spiral risk. Hiring quality collapsing.

  5. Stage 5

    Cooling

Layoffs rising. Hiring freezes. Wage growth decelerating. Cycle resetting.
