Methodology

## What this measures

Mean `confidence_score` (0 = hedging everywhere, 1 = firm conviction) across the trailing-90-day analysis corpus.

## Why it matters

Confidence and sentiment diverge at turns: management can sound positive while hedging every number. The gap is the tell.

## How to read it

The score runs from 0 to 1. A rise means executives are hedging less and committing more firmly to their statements; a fall means more qualifiers and less conviction. Compare it to sentiment signals to spot gaps between tone and certainty.

## What it does not say

It does not measure whether the statements themselves are accurate or whether confidence is warranted. A high score means firm language, not necessarily correct forecasts.

## Source

Palanor derives the series from its discourse corpus, which captures executive communications. The confidence score reflects linguistic certainty in the trailing 90 days of analyzed text.

## Revision — 2026-09-26

Universe updated to current S&P 500 constituents (8 out, 3 in). Out: Builders FirstSource, Molson Coors and The Trade Desk, which left the index on 21 September 2026; Electronic Arts, which was taken private and left on 5 August 2026; and MongoDB, Cloudflare, Snowflake and Zoom, which were never members and had been included in error since May 2026. In: Bloom Energy, Everpure and Illumina, which joined on 21 September 2026. Membership now comes from a dated constituent list refreshed monthly. The corrected list applies from 26 September 2026. Readings before that date are unchanged.
