Palanor Data in Python, Excel and Google Sheets

Read Palanor signals, Foresight, saved screens and the company graph from Python or straight into Excel or Google Sheets with your API key, and see where every value comes from.

Updated 2026-10-22

Palanor Data has three ways in, and one API key works for all of them: the Palanor MCP for AI agents, the REST API at api.palanor.com/v1, and the clients described here: Python, an Excel add-in and a Google Sheets add-on. Get a free key at palanor.com/developers/keys: sign in with your email, Microsoft or Google, no invitation needed. It includes 1,000 requests a month. Manage your keys at app.palanor.com/api-tokens.

The fastest start is the formula builder at palanor.com/developers#formulas. Search for a signal, pick a function, and copy the formula for Excel, Google Sheets, Python or curl. Every signal it offers is licensed for use outside Palanor, so the formula returns a value.

Excel

Download palanor.com/excel/manifest.xml and add it to Excel. In Excel on the web: Home, Add-ins, More add-ins, My add-ins, Upload my add-in. The steps for Windows and Mac are on palanor.com/developers. Then open Home, Palanor, paste your key and press Save.

In the task pane, press / to search. Use the arrow keys to pick a signal, then press Enter to write =PALANOR.LAST into the selected cell. Shift+Enter writes five years of monthly history, and Option+Enter (Alt+Enter on Windows) writes the Foresight read, which needs a Pro or Enterprise key. Under Screens, List my screens shows the screens you saved on the Entity Screener; Enter spills one into the sheet.

PALANOR.LAST refreshes itself while the workbook is open. Choose how often under Sources in this session: every 15 minutes, every hour (the default), every 4 hours, or by hand. Each refresh reads every LAST cell in the workbook in one batch, at one request per ten signals (a sheet of 25 signals spends three requests a refresh).

Google Sheets

Open Extensions, Apps Script, replace Code.gs with palanor.com/sheets/Palanor.gs, save, and reload the spreadsheet. A Palanor menu appears: Set API key, then Search signals and screens. Sheets does not allow a dot in a function name, so the functions are PALANOR_LAST, PALANOR_HISTORY and so on.

Your key is kept in your Apps Script user properties, never in a cell. Google runs custom functions with the spreadsheet owner's properties, so formulas in a shared spreadsheet spend the owner's key. Palanor, Refresh data fetches every formula again.

Python

  • pip install "palanor[pandas]" (0.2.1, with foresight(), search(), screen() and entity(), is served from palanor.com/developers/python until it reaches PyPI)
  • export PALANOR_API_KEY="plnr_..."
  • p = Palanor(), then p.signals.observations("rates.spread_2y10y", start="2020-01-01", freq="month").to_pandas()

The client follows pages for you and retries brief failures. When your monthly requests run out it stops with QuotaExceededError rather than retrying.

Where the data comes from

Every value carries a provenance block: the source, the publisher, the license, and the credit line to show with it. In Python it is on each result and in the DataFrame's attrs. In Excel, select a cell with a PALANOR formula and the task pane shows its source. Add sources sheet (Excel and Sheets) writes every source used into the workbook.

What you won't get

Signals whose license allows display in Palanor but not redistribution, such as licensed market prices, are not served. The cell shows #N/A with that reason, and Python raises NotFoundError. Saved screens and the company graph (SCREEN, ENTITY) need a Pro or Enterprise key. First-reported values (vintage "first") are shown only inside Palanor for now.
