Canada Sense of Meaning and Purpose (Statistics Canada)

Latest

Methodology

## What this measures

The average answer, 0–10, to "To what extent do you feel the things you do in your life are worthwhile?" — Statistics Canada's measure of a sense of meaning and purpose. It is the same question ONS asks in the UK (wellbeing.uk.worthwhile).

## Why it matters

Life satisfaction asks how life is going; this asks whether it feels worthwhile. It is a direct, official measure of meaning, published quarterly.

## How to read it

Higher is better. Read it alongside the share reporting a strong sense of meaning (wellbeing.ca.high_meaning_share), which moves more.

## What it does not say

The Canadian Social Survey is voluntary and started in 2021, so the history is short. Each quarter is a fresh sample; treat single-quarter moves of less than a point (percentage series) or 0.1 (ratings) as noise, and check the confidence intervals Statistics Canada publishes.
